Therapy Intensives
We all live based on a story we believe about ourselves and our lives. Few of us take the time to understand that story, grieve it, and take steps to change its course. Doing that work within the context of honor and honesty can lay the groundwork for a life lived to the fullest.
I offer half-day and full-day intensive therapy experiences.
An intensive is a customized counseling experience that allows you to do a different type of work than a typical one-hour-a-week therapy session allows. It’s not a cure or an answer to every issue, but it is a unique tool.
An intensive might be a good option for you if:
You want something more personalized and customized than the typical one-hour therapy session each week.
There is a recurring issue or decision in your life that you have not been able to understand or reach a conclusion on.
You live in a rural area of Mississippi and find it difficult to drive to a metro area each week for a one-hour session.
You want to understand your story more thoroughly and start taking steps toward recovery and healing.
You find that you need more time to process emotions and connect with someone in order to open up than a one-hour session allows.
You, like the rest of us, want dedicated time and attention that can be hard to come by in the regular rhythms of busy life.
Telehealth is more practical for you due to location or work, but you want to establish an in-person relationship to help ease the feeling of distance that often comes with trying to connect through a screen.
I enjoy intensives for several reasons:
I have more time to get to know my clients better. We can process their stories in a sequential format in a way that weekly therapy often doesn’t allow.
I can offer more structured, evidence-based interventions that I might not be willing to do in a one-hour session because there’s often not enough time to discuss the events of the week, implement the intervention, and help the client cope with the feelings that the intervention brings up.
I can plan ahead to offer a customized toolbox that fits the client’s needs based on the assessments I send them prior to the intensive.
I can provide resources that I wish I could offer to all my clients, such as a written narrative from the counselor’s perspective about who the client is, what their strengths are, how they’ve struggled, how they got stuck, where they want to end up in their future, and how they might get there. This type of organized narrative can be a helpful tool to help you live into a different story.
Who is a good fit for an intensive?
I accept clients for intensives who have a desire to do some extra work in counseling. If clients are curious and want to try it, they will benefit. If a client’s primary motivation is that a friend or family member is telling them they need to do it, then I would recommend sticking with regular outpatient therapy or another type of program. The particular topics we discuss are of less concern to me than the willingness to engage. If a client is willing and curious, they will likely benefit from better understanding their stories, connecting with someone who is genuinely interested in them, and implementing some new tools and knowledge. I currently offer intensives for clients aged 16 years and older.
